Understanding software asset relationships

The key to managing software assets is understanding the difference between what has been licensed and what has been installed. The IT Asset Management Pack uses the following items for software asset management:

The first four items are defined in the Provance IT Asset Management Pack, while software items come from the connector to System Center 2012 Configuration Manager.

We determine what has been installed through discovered installation data. Installation data is provided by creating a relationship between the Windows computer CI (created by the Configuration Manager connector), the software (created by the Configuration Manager connector from Configuration Manager Asset Intelligence data), and the hardware asset. Indirectly this creates a relationship between the hardware asset and a software title, see the following figure.
